I am a professional engineer who helps facility managers make their buildings more efficient so they use less energy and water. This helps the environment and saves money. I travel all over the United States and into other countries. Right now, I am working with a team to help our National Parks figure out how they can conserve resources in smart ways that keep our parks running well. I also help educate others on what they can do to promote sustainability in their organizations. Just recently I helped author a new guide that helps Facility Managers learn how to earn the Energy Star in their buildings.

Here is what I love about my job: I get to use science, technology, creativity, and my imagination to solve problems for people. And there are no limits. We just have use whatever knowledge and tools we have to solve problems. Two weeks ago, in fact, I helped a client figure out where an odor problem was by putting lavender oil in their exhaust system. The building engineers had tried everything to figure out where the cooking smells from the adjacent restaurant were coming from, but could not fix the problem. I went through their system to see if I could figure it out. We thought we knew what the problem areas were, but once we launched the smell test (lavender oil on a Q-tip), it became really obvious. So, we tracked down the problem (science & creativity!) and helped the building owner fix it. That was pretty cool. And fun. I promise you, a guy would have a hard time thinking that one up.
